What to Teach Your Young Child About Money – Sean Savage

Financial Advisor, Sean Savage offers some great advice to young families on the importance of encouraging your kids to form good habits in regards to savings and investing. Here is his first in a series of articles published S

Parents cannot delegate financial lessons for our children to anyone else. Teach your children the importance of saving and investing for the future before poor habits are formed. I was fortunate to learn from my parents the discipline of saving money at a young age which put me on the path to make financial advising my profession. My wife Carolyn and I have six children ages 2-22. The following are a few simple ways I teach financial responsibility to our three young daughters (age 6, 6, & 9).

  • Lead by Example – If you want your child to be a good saver, be a good saver yourself. Kids will model the behaviors they observe at home. Talk to your children about the importance of saving money for the future. This does not mean saving for a specific purpose, but saving with the idea of accumulating funds to invest.
  • Keep it Simple – The most important financial concept for a child under the age of 10 to learn is the importance of saving money. It’s something you can teach before they learn how to read. As your children earn money through chores, achievement, and gifts, encourage them save in their piggy bank and, ultimately, the real bank. Enthusiastically celebrate their savings success so they feel good about their behavior.
  • Bank Accounts – Each child should have a bank account by the time they are 5 years old. We make a big deal out of organizing their money and taking it to the bank for deposit. About every 2 months, I load the kids in the car for a Saturday morning trip to the bank. Each of them goes to the counter to deposit their money, get an update on their account balance and, of course, pick out a sucker. A small percent of the money is held back and used to pick out a toy as an immediate reward for saving.
  • Drop a Hint about Investing – I introduce simple ideas about investing and why it is important to eventually transition money from the bank to investments. Understanding investing in terms of owning part of a company and getting paid when people buy things from that company is as complex as you should be at this age.

Planting the seeds of financial discipline at a very young age is good parenting. The education must continue as your child becomes older and the message needs to change at each age bracket.

Ready for Open Enrollment 2017?

Know Your Dates

The open enrollment period for 2017 coverage is between the dates of November 1, 2016- January 31, 2017. You must apply by December 15, 2016 to ensure an effective date for January 1. Because of the expected volume of applicants, please contact an agent as soon as possible to complete your application.

Savage agent Steve Milewski cautions clients to make sure they apply as soon they can. His advice is to “Be aware that you will have a limited opportunity to buy coverage outside of the open enrollment period. If you do lose coverage, you should take action within two months”.

Know Your Numbers

Depending on your expected annual income, you may be eligible to receive a subsidy to help offset the cost of health insurance premiums. It is imperative to accurately estimate your household income, as this subsidy can change based on that number. There are repercussions for inaccurately estimating your income; if you use more tax credits than you qualified for, you will have to pay back the difference on your tax return. If your household income ends up being lower than you estimated, you will get the difference back in the form of a tax refund.

Know Your Coverage

The Affordable Care Act includes guaranteed issue provisions, which means that no one can be denied coverage because of their health conditions. While that means anyone can apply, the process can still be cumbersome. A Savage agent is able to simplify the process for you by presenting the best options for your unique scenarios and help you find the coverage you need, at the cost you can afford.

There are four metal tiers of coverage: PlatinumGoldSilver, and Bronze. All plans include preventive care benefits, but have different levels of cost sharing and coverage. According to Daniel Finkel, a Savage agent specializing in individual coverage, “While it may be tempting to choose the lowest priced plan, it’s important to consider if you can afford the deductible that comes with it, and to have a company and an agent that are there when you need them”.

Know the Consequences

Going without health insurance opens you up to the risk of not being covered in the case of an emergency. It also means you might be responsible for paying a steep fee, known as the individual shared responsibility payment. The fee is calculated based on either your income, or a per person fee, whichever is higher.

Know Your Allies

An agent is your lifeline in a world that may be foreign to you. Agent Tamy Hagan supports her clients by providing “the expertise of helping you choose a plan to best suit your needs by searching all plans available, cross referencing your doctors, and assisting you throughout the year with any questions or concerns you may have”.

In a world of options, your Savage agent can help you navigate through the overwhelming amount of information to find the best coverage for you and your family. Contact a Savage agent for personalized assistance on getting a health insurance policy that meets your needs.

Savage and Associates offers a team of Certified Health Insurance Agents that can help you find the health insurance you need for yourself and your family.  Our agents can explain the details so that the process will be completed correctly, thereby avoiding any potential processing delays. Using an agent will ensure that you sign up for a plan that fits within your budget and that your doctors are in network. When using an agent, there is no additional fee, and you will have a licensed professional as an ally who will help you select the correct plan and help with future service questions or claim issues. Your agent is there for you long after you are enrolled in a plan.

TOLEDO, OH—Advisor Group, one of the largest independent broker-dealer networks in the nation, hosted the 2016 W Forum in Salt Lake City, June 5-7. The event was the firm’s 10th annual women’s conference to provide educational and networking opportunities, to support female advisors as they grow their financial services practices.  As part of the event, The Community Leadership Award (established in 2013) is presented to a female advisor who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to helping women grow personally, professionally or financially within her community.

This year’s winner is Kelly Savage of Savage & Associates in Toledo, Ohio.  Kelly is a trailblazer—both as a financial advisor and as a role model for young professionals.  Her leadership efforts are well known in the community and with local charities.  Whether it was as a mentor for young women at her high school alma mater, Notre Dame Academy or by promoting the University of Toledo Women’s basketball program, Kelly values the opportunity to share the wisdom and experience she has gained to help other women build a path for success.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides is one of her favorite charity events.  For 6 years she has served in different roles such as: chairperson for their annual fund drive, team captain for participants, event speaker as well a flagship sponsor.

Kelly also serves as tournament head for the Savage Foundation Golf Classic (SFGC) which is recognized as the largest one-day golf fundraisers in Northwest Ohio.  Kelly and her committee hand pick local charities as benefactors for the event. This year, one of the benefactors is The Bethany House, a local battered women’s shelter that provides a long term solution to help women get back on their feet and become contributing members of society.

Advisor Group recognized Kelly during their event and made a donation to Grace Community Center which is one of the charitable organizations she serves.

The Most Important Question to Ask a Financial Advisor

Savage and Associates advisor, Sean Savage discusses an important question to ask when selecting a financial advisor

Have you ever considered asking a financial advisor… “How is your financial picture?” It may sound like a strange and awkward question to ask; don’t you want to know the answer? I think it is perfectly fair to place a premium on selecting an advisor who has personally implemented a financial strategy in their own life which has proven successful. I think this may be the most important question you can ask a prospective financial advisor that you are considering hiring. The reason why goes beyond the obvious.

Yes, you want to work with someone who knows what it takes to build a strong financial foundation because this is very helpful when dispensing advice. There is another important consideration though. A financial advisor who has built a base of investment assets understands personally the emotion involved with market fluctuations and will naturally have more empathy and understanding of what a client experiences through economic turbulence. This experience is invaluable.

Ask the question.

Savage Team Participates in a Snowy Walk for MS

On Sunday, April 10, 2016 an unexpected surprise awaited our Savage “Sisters with Soule” team who ventured to the University of Toledo to walk in the Annual Walk for MS. When the team arrived, they found out that the 5 mile walk route was cancelled due to the weather conditions. Who would have thought we’d get the biggest snowfall of the season the day before? Since the walkers were still willing to brave the weather conditions and complete the walk,  officials decided to allow participants to walk a one mile route on campus grounds instead of the 5 mile route.

Some of the “Sisters” decided that one mile was not enough, so they walk the route more than once . But, by the entire team finished, the snow was falling pretty good. The weather was tough, but it brought to mind the obstacles that people who suffer from MS face daily.

Donations are still coming in but in the end, our Sisters with Soule team will have raise upwards of $3500 for the MS Society. Savage employees alone have donated over $2500, which will be matched by the company. The team spokesperson, Laura Fulop has lead this event for the past several years and is extremely grateful and proud on how supportive her co-workers are in helping to find a cure for Multiple sclerosis.

Savage Fit Program Serves up Healthy Fun

What better way to test health and wellness initiatives for clients than by trying them out with our own employees?

At Savage & Associates, we encourage our employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a variety of fun activities to promote wellness. SavageFit creates wellness programs that are designed to improve the overall well-being of employees. Using social outreach with Twitter, Facebook and email marketing newsletters, SavageFit keeps a constant eye on what is trending in healthcare and health education. A great way to keep the wellness message in the daily feed.

In the office, a challenge is always good way to kick start good, healthy habits. In line with the 2016 NCAA Tournament, SavageFit created a March Madness wellness activity challenge. Each work day, employees are challenged to complete and track specific healthy activities from three different category lists: Free Throw, 2-points, and 3-points. The goal is to complete four activities from each of the three categories every day. Sheets are turned in and become eligible for a drawing for a gift card at the end of the tournament.

Health management is a business strategy. In today’s climate, companies need plan design options to arrest and reduce health care costs. Helping employees have the tools to live a healthy lifestyle is imperative. Here at Savage & Associates, we want to be a role model for the culture of wellness and prevention, promoting personal responsibility in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The end result of these good habits are:

• Reduced Worker’s Compensation Days
• Reduced Absenteeism
• Improvement in Morale
• Reduced Disability
• Increased Productivity
• Social Responsibility
• Decreased Healthcare Cost
• Increased Healthy Lifestyle Awareness
• Improved Disease Management
• Healthier, happier employees…

All this translates into lower costs for employers and employees.
