Savage earns national recognition for leadership in corporate philanthropy

Savage and Associates has been announced as one of only 20 financial advisory firms in the nation selected for the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation’s Charitable Champions List.

The Charitable Champions List recognizes advisory firms for their exemplary efforts to give back to their communities by promoting a culture of philanthropy amongst employees and financial advisors. Applications were evaluated by an expert judging panel on criteria including employee benefits, company contributions, and philanthropic events and programs offered by the firms.

“This honor represents the work of our many dedicated advisors and staff that give so much of their time to help others,” stated J.R. Toland, president and CEO, Savage and Associates. “We feel privileged to serve those in need across northwest Ohio and beyond.”

Savage and Associates holds several programs and events throughout the year, including the Savage Foundation Golf Classic, Savage 5K, and many other notable philanthropy endeavors. The Golf Classic alone has raised more than $1.3 million for charities since 2003.

John Metzger and Kyle Schimming Earn Accreditations

Savage is proud to announce that Investment Advisor Representatives John Metzger and Kyle Schimming have received the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies®.

The AIF® designation certifies that recipients have obtained expert knowledge about fiduciary care standards—and how to apply those standards in their investment management practices. Earning the AIF professional certification involves participating in a rigorous training program, passing a comprehensive exam, satisfying minimum experience requirements, and agreeing to abide by the Center’s code-of-ethics and conduct standards.

“Achieving the AIF designation demonstrates how dedicated John and Kyle are to their professions and their clients,” says Russ Karban, Savage’s Managing Executive. “Their commitment—at such young ages—to the fiduciary standard of always doing what’s in a client’s best interest is impressive.”

Having joined Savage in 2016, John Metzger helps individuals and families with their insurance protection, investments, and retirement plans.

Kyle Schimming joined Savage in 2015. He focuses on retirement planning for businesses and individuals, and he works with local employers to establish retirement plans for their employees.

Farmers Market Comes to Savage

Savage Farmers Market

When Liz Harmon read an article describing the growing popularity of hosting Farmers Markets at work, she thought her coworkers would love the idea. Liz, Savage’s Practice Development and Recruitment Coordinator, also saw a connection to the company’s longtime commitment to encouraging healthful habits.

“As a company, we try hard to focus on work-life balance and employee wellness, and we had done so long before it became in vogue,” says Liz. “So the idea for a weekly fruit and vegetable stand on the Savage campus was well-received by management.”

For more than 40 years, Savage has made fresh fruit available to associates each workday. Providing easy access to fresh local produce at our office entryway is an extension to that employee benefit.

Supporting our local communities is one of Savage’s core values, so we made certain to partner with a produce vendor with strong area ties.

“So far, it’s been popular with our employees,” reports Liz. “Everyone has been excited to take a quick break and soak up some sunshine while checking out the delicious options available each week.”

The Farmers Market takes place every Thursday afternoon from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the Savage parking lot throughout the growing season.

Savage Golf Classic Scores Big

Golfers at Savage Golf Classic 2019

Shhh. Don’t tell Mother Nature, but the pesky rain took a break while we held the 16th Annual Savage Foundation Golf Classic. The popular charity event took place June 17 at Stone Oak Country Club. Three dozen foursomes participated in an exciting day of golf, fun, and community.

This year’s outing raised more than $80,000 for local charities. We distributed half of the proceeds at a reception following the golf, including $12,500 donations to both Racing for Recovery and SeaGate Food Bank. Remaining funds will help support other nonprofits throughout the year.

Since its inception in 2003, the Savage Foundation has raised more than $1.2 million for northwest Ohio charities. We couldn’t do it without the hundreds of friends and supporters who take part in the tournament each year. Thank you to everyone who attended; we appreciate all you do to support our charities.

We Did It: The 2019 Savage 5k Run-Walk Celebration

Savage & Associates employees, along with their families and friends, laced up their running shoes and represented our company in the inaugural Savage 5k on April 27. Part of Mercy Health Glass City Marathon weekend, the Savage-sponsored 5k drew nearly 1,500 participants who ran and walked a 3.1-mile course winding throughout the University of Toledo campus.

Congratulations to all runners and walkers. Finishers received a medal, a commemorative glass mug, and plenty of post-race food and refreshments.

Our own Sean Savage ran the course in 18 minutes and 47 seconds, finishing ninth place overall. Complete race results are available on the Mercy Glass City Marathon website.

In addition to race participants, Savage colleagues served as volunteers at the event throughout Marathon weekend, working at a water stop along the course and staffing our booth at the expo on Friday and Saturday.

The Savage is the area’s premier spring 5k. We look forward to next year’s event on Saturday, April 25, 2020.

Savage and Associates Among Area’s 2019 Top Workplaces

Top Work Places 2019 Logo

For the third consecutive year, The Blade has ranked Savage and Associates among the Top Workplaces in the Toledo region. In 2019, The Blade recognized 45 companies and organizations for the annual honor based on feedback collected from thousands of area employees.

Toledo area public, private, nonprofit, and government organizations that employ 35 or more people are eligible to take part in the Top Workplaces contest. Savage has been recognized in each year it has participated.

“For decades, the employees and the advisors of Savage have known that it’s a great place to work,” says Elizabeth Harmon, the company’s practice development and recruitment director. “Getting this recognition means that the rest of the community knows, too.”

As in past years, The Blade partnered with Energage Media Partnerships to conduct the workplace poll. Workers for nominated employers were invited to complete a 24-question survey about their companies.

“Top Workplaces rewards employers that work hard to build a healthy workplace culture,” says Energage’s director Bob Helbig. “It’s good for morale, and it’s good for business.”

Savage & Associates Among Top Workplaces in 2018

Named #1 Midsize Employer in Northwest Ohio

For the second year in a row, The Blade has ranked Savage & Associates among the Top Workplaces in the Toledo region. And this year, Savage topped the list of midsize companies—those employing 75-299 people. The honors are part of The Blade’s annual Top Workplace survey, which collects feedback from thousands of area employees.

This is the fifth year The Blade has partnered with Energage—a Philadelphia-based employee research and consulting firm—to conduct the workplace survey. Seventy-two Toledo-area companies participated in the competition, each having a requisite 35 or more employees. In all, more than 7,400 respondents scored their employers on factors ranging from leadership to employee engagement.

Savage & Associates has participated in the survey twice, making the Top Workplaces list both times.

“It really is about the culture,” explains J.R. Toland, the company’s president and CEO. “It’s a very positive and supportive work environment.”

In their anonymous survey comments, Savage & Associates employees conveyed similar beliefs about the firm’s culture. Respondents expressed appreciation for leaders who make them feel cared for and valued, and who genuinely model Savage’s vision and values.

“Savage is just different,” says Marianne Peters, director of people and performance. “John Savage, who founded the company with his brother Bob, affected people here in such a positive manner. Twenty-five years after John’s passing, I think everyone wants to keep that culture going for him.”

Preserving John Savage’s legacy culture while also inspiring young employees who never met him presents a bit of a challenge. But throughout the years, says Toland, Savage has never deviated from its basic business philosophy.

“It’s all about relationships and caring about people. That constant will always be there.”

Robert & Susan Savage Receive Outstanding Philanthropist Award

Few individuals impact philanthropic efforts in Northwest Ohio as greatly as Robert and Susan Savage, who work tirelessly to make our community a better place.

In recognition of their generosity, Bob and Sue Savage are 2017 recipients of the Outstanding Philanthropists Award presented by the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

Bob and Sue contribute their time and treasure to countless area organizations, including the University of Toledo, Imagination Station, Toledo Lucas County Public Library, and Toledo-area Christ Child Society—just to name a few.

Bob and Sue will be recognized at AFP’s 30th Annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon on November 9. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Premier Banquet Hall in Toledo.

Savage and Associates Celebrates Groundbreaking

Rain can’t stop Savage and Associates’ staff, business associates, and area public officials from kicking off new headquarters construction.

From left to right: Mark Smigelski, Joel Tschantz, J.R. Toland, Russ Karban, Scott Walsh, and Kelly Savage break ground for the new headquarters.

Savage and Associates held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new headquarters on Tuesday, September 19th. Savage advisors, employees, representatives from NAI Harmon Group, local politicians, and the news media gathered on the site of the future headquarters. Government and business leaders spoke about the new building and why Savage and Associates’ continued presence in the community is so important to northwest Ohio.

U.S. Representative Bob Latta joined in to express that having successful businesses like Savage in the area is vital to the continued resurgence of the region. Maumee Mayor Rich Carr added that Savage’s commitment to the community over its 60-year history is what sets the business apart. He noted the Savage Foundation and the more than $1 million it has raised for charity in the community.

Ed Harmon, CEO NAI Harmon Group, spoke about how the partnership between NAI Harmon Group and Savage allowed the project to happen. J.R. Toland, President and CEO of Savage and Associates, wrapped up the festivities by speaking about the success of Savage and how the new building will allow our clients to continue to receive unparalleled service.

The new headquarters will be located between US 23 North and Arrowhead Road, just south of West Dussel Drive. Savage’s 55 advisors and 45 employees are expected to move into the new building in Fall 2018.
