Robert Savage
Co-Founder, Past President

Robert Savage (Bob), co-founder and past President and CEO of Savage and Associates, graduated from The University of Toledo in 1959, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business, with a major in finance. A month before this graduation, Bob joined his older brother, John, who had been in the life insurance business for five years, and they opened their first business organization, known today as Savage & Associates, Inc. Following John’s service as company President and CEO, Bob became President and CEO on January 1, 1975 and served for 28 years. Though Bob has since stepped down as President and CEO, he remains a key component to the Savage environment; he attends Savage management meetings, but concentrates most of his time, energy, and talent working to make Toledo and Northwest Ohio a better place. Today Bob carries the title of Chairman Emeritus.

During the National Philanthropy Day of 2009, Bob was recognized as the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser in Northwestern Ohio for the year. A long time civic and business leader in the Greater Toledo area, Bob has served on boards of many community organizations and is the past President of the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Board of Directors, and the Toledo Opera. He is the co-founder of the Toledo kids’ science museum, known today as the Imagination Station, and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Board, and President of The Science Society, a newly created organization whose goals are to provide exceptional exhibits for the Imagination Station. Bob is one of the original members of the Toledo Distinguished Clown Corps, an organization that sponsors the Toledo Holiday Parade, and he has served as its Chairman for the last six years.

Bob’s long time community passion is helping to improve The University of Toledo – a university capable of giving those without strong financial means an opportunity to learn and excel – and is actively involved in the development and improvement of the campus. He was a major campus leader as a student, and served 11 years until 1996 as Trustee at the University where he was Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. Last year, he completed a nine year term as Trustee for The University of Toledo Foundation.

Bob was the driving force behind the new College of Business building (2010) at UT, which bears the name of our company, the Savage and Associates Complex for Business Learning and Engagement. His campus involvement and support has not gone unrecognized: in 2003 Bob received the University’s Top Alumni award – the Gold T Award, and a few years ago Bob had the honor to be the University’s Commencement speaker. Bob received The University of Toledo’s College of Business Administration’s top annual award and was named Pacemaker of the Year for 2010. Prior to serving on The University of Toledo Board, Bob served six years as a Trustee and Vice Chairman, Bowling Green State University.

In 1991, Bob was selected by the Ernst Young, Merrill Lynch, and INC Magazine as the Entrepreneur of the Year for Northwestern Ohio. On a national level, Bob has served on the Board of Directors for many companies and corporations, three of which were listed on The New York Stock Exchange. Bob was a founding director of the FirstEnergy Company which is the fifth largest investor owned public utility company in the United States, where he chaired the Finance Committee. He served a total of 18 years on the Board of FirstEnergy, and its predecessor corporation, Centerior Energy. According to Fortune magazine, “FirstEnergy was ranked as one of the 250 largest companies in America.”

The General Agents and Managers Associates (GAMA) International selects just one person per year, out of seven thousand who run financial services firms in the United States, to be inducted into their National Hall of Fame. In 1999 Bob was the inductee. Bob served a few years as a member of the GAMA International Board of Directors and the GAMA International Foundation Board of Directors, having served three years as Foundation President. Since 1992, GAMA International has selected Savage and Associates as one of the top 100 largest financial services organizations in America. Today, Bob serves on both the Solar Fields and Solar Cells Board of Directors, which are part of the international solar energy business.

Over the course of his career, Bob has been a prominent business speaker, and has earned numerous local and national business awards and distinctions, including speaking on the main platform of Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), and at GAMA’s International Annual LAMP meeting. He has received numerous local and national business awards and distinctions. He has qualified for and attended every MDRT meeting since 1967 and is a member of the MDRT’s Excalibur Society.**

In addition to his successful business career, Bob and his wife, Sue, are in their 49th year of marriage. They were blessed with six great children, today all adults, and fourteen grandchildren. Their children are graduates of Boston College, William and Mary, Duke, Harvard, and the Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania.
